Description

This photo doesn't even begin to do justice to the true grandeur of this sight. The sheer scale is breathtaking- for a rough idea, Huayna Potosí (the snowcapped mountain) is 6,008 meters (19,974 feet) high, less than 200 meters lower than Mount McKinley (the highest point in North America), and higher than anything Europe, Australia, Antarctica, or Africa have to offer.
I came here on a trip with my school, and we were planning to make it all the way to the flanks of the mountain, until the bus broke down. We walked a ways along the southern edge of a low hill, and upon rounding a corner were suddenly greeted with the enormous white mountain and valley beneath. Hell, it was so epic there were even eagles circling over the damn thing. I walked a ways down to the reservoir at the foot of the mountain, and searched for some interesting compositions- this one was a personal favorite.

On another note, that reservoir provides nearly all the water for the capital city of La Paz, and is in danger of going dry as the glaciers on the mountain melt. Asking local people whether climate change seems to be having an effect gets you the same reaction you would have if you asked a doctor if he'd ever thought of using rubber gloves during medical procedures.

The first thing that struck me is how clear the image is, secondly, the stone in the foreground is a nice touch as it breaks up the otherwise visually bland bracken and lake. Another cleaver touch is the way that you are almost comparing the stone, which seems big - even though it isn't - with the mountains that look small in comparison, with each other. To me it conveys the message - even if you didn't intend it to - that small things are important as all big things are made up of them.

A nice, well composed shot that has very deep, contrasting colours.
